    The relationship between strategic planning and improving institutional performance

    The globalization phenomenon have led most organizations around the world to focus more on strategic planning. Strategic planning practices become common business management field. Universities in Iraq are affected by these changes in the world of businesses, and they are working now under high competition markets. That encourages them to start focusing on strategic planning (SP) practices and improving their institutional performance (IP). The purpose of the study is to tests the effect of SP on the IP in two of main and important Iraqi universities. The contribution of this study is that it provides statistical analysis to test the effects of SP on IP. This study was applied on two of Iraqi universities that have applied SP practices. The population of the study is 1000 employees, who are the managers, professors, and employees working in different positions in the universities. A random sample method was used to draw a sample. Using SSPS 17.0 software, all the statistical tests and analyses including factor analysis and regression analysis were performed. The results showed that the sample is good since it has a high percentage of participants with a high level of education and work experience. The results revealed that General Planning has positive and significant impact only on Mission Statement and Goals. The results revealed also that Institutional Support has positive and significant impact only on Planning and Integrity. The results showed that Financial Support and Psychological Support has no impact on any dependent variable. That means, SP can partially affect IP in Iraqi universities. The study concludes that SP can partially improve the IP of Iraqi universities. Even the role of SP is limited in improving the IP; it still has positive effect on IP. The study recommends that the Iraqi universities need to advance their SP practices to improve their IP.
