Yayın The impact of stress on diabetes management – a sentiment analysis approach(İstanbul Gedik Üniversitesi, Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, 2025) Ali, Engy Mohamed Khalil; Suvay Eker, HalimeManaging diabetes is a lifelong responsibility that requires more than taking medication; it also involves maintaining mental and emotional well-being. Stress is one of the most critical psychological factors that complicates effective diabetes management. This study explores how stress affects diabetes self-care by analyzing patient narratives from online health forums using sentiment analysis. Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools, including TextBlob and VADER, were applied to 792 patient comments to identify emotional patterns, especially those related to stress. The findings show that stress significantly impacts how individuals with diabetes express their experiences online. A large portion of the comments revealed negative sentiment and high subjectivity, particularly regarding mental health, treatment adherence, and lifestyle difficulties. However, the results do not suggest that stress always leads to negative behavior or feelings among all diabetic patients. While some topics showed strong emotional burden, others reflected resilience, coping mechanisms, and supportive community interactions. Further research is needed to better understand the complex relationship between stress and emotional response in diabetes, and the situational factors that influence this dynamic. This study demonstrates the value of using NLP to analyze patient-generated content and highlights the importance of integrating emotional support into diabetes care.
