The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between married and single individuals' self-construals, separation-individuation levels and the defense mechanisms they use. The sample of the study consisted of 635 participants, 310 married and 325 single, aged 18 and over, living in different provinces of Turkey. Personal Information Form, Autonomy-Relationship Scales (SBS), Separation-Individuation Scale (ASI) and Defense Styles Test (SBT-40) were used in the study. Research data were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 program. Chi-squared test, independent t-test, two-way anova, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation analysis were used in the analyses. As a result of the research, it was found that the autonomous self-construal of the married participants had a negative relationship with the separation-individuation scale and the sub-dimensions of the scale, division and differentiation, and a negative relationship with the neurotic defenses, which was the sub-dimension of the defense styles test. It was observed that there is a positive relationship between the relational self-construals of the married participants and the separation-individuation scale and the sub-dimensions of the scale, division and differentiation, and a positive relationship with the neurotic defenses, which is the sub-dimension of the defense styles test. It was determined that married participants had a negative relationship with the autonomous relational self-construals of the separation-individuation scale and the sub-dimensions of the scale, such as division, differentiation, and relational problems, and a negative significant relationship with immature defenses, which is the sub-dimension of the test with the defense styles test, and a positively significant relationship with mature defenses. It was found that there was a negative and significant relationship between the autonomous self-construal of the single participants and the separation-individuation scale and the sub-dimensions of the scale, division, differentiation and relational problems, and a negative and significant relationship between the defense styles test grand total score and its sub-dimensions, immature and neurotic defenses. There was no significant relationship between the relational self-construals of single participants and the separation-individuation scale and all the sub-dimensions of the scale, and it was observed that there was a positive and significant relationship with neurotic defenses, which is the sub-dimension of the defense styles test. The autonomous relational self-construals of single participants and the separation-individuation scale and the sub-dimensions of the scale, division, differentiation and relational problems, were negative and significant, while the defense styles test and the sub-dimension of the test were immature defenses and neurotic defenses, and the sub-dimensions of the scale were positive and negative. was found to have a significant relationship. It was observed that the autonomous relational self-construal of married and single individuals differed significantly. It was found that the fact that the participants were married or single created significant differences in the separation-individuation levels and the defense mechanisms they used. It was determined that the scores of the married and single participants on the autonomy-relationship scales were below the average and above the average, differing the separation individuation levels or the defense mechanisms they used. Finally, the relationships between the participants' self-construals, separation-individuation levels and the defense mechanisms they use with various socio-demographic characteristics were also examined and significant differences were reached.
